Oberammergau Passion Play 2020

In 1632, The Black Plague was on the cusp of a little town in Germany called Oberammergau.  The people of Oberammergau made a vow to God that if he spared their town from the inevitable plague  they would regularly perform the Passion Play as a sign of repentance.  After this pledge, no one died. and the first Passion Play was staged in 1634.   Now every decade, the Passion Play is performed in this town and transforms the whole village.  As you can imagine, the experience is on many travellers bucket-list.

Interesting facts:

  • In 2010 over 2,000 adults and children were involved
  • Only locals who have lived in the village for at least 20 years, or born there can be in the play
  • Since 1680 the play has performed on the first year of each decade
  • Other than during WWII and and in 1770, the play has performed uninterrupted every decade
  • The Passion Play in 2010 was sold out within days of tickets being released to wholesalers
